Line Reactors / Filters

Line Reactors

Line/load reactors help to keep equipment running longer by absorbing many of the power disturbances which otherwise damage motors and drives. Reactors can be used on the input or output of an AC drive. When used on the input, the reactor protects the drive from voltage transients on the power line. It also protects sensitive equipment from noise generated by the drive. Since the Phoenix drives themselves have a built in three percent (3%) bus reactor, an external line reactor is typically not needed. On the output of a drive, the reactor reduces voltage transients seen by the motor.

US Drives, Inc.'s AC line/load reactors are harmonic compensated to assure optimum performance in the presents of harmonics. Linearity of an AC line/load reactor is very important. Even at one hundred fifty percent (150%) of their current rating, these reactors still have one hundred percent (100%) of their nominal inductance. This assures maximum filtering of distortion even in the presence of severe harmonics and best absorption of surges.

Filters

Long motor leads on an AC drive can create a number of problems. Here are a few symptoms that you may see if your leads are too long:  The drive may go into current limit prematurely; overvoltage trip for no reason; fail to deliver enough starting torque or cause motor insulation breakdown due to high voltage at the motor.

All of our Phoenix Drives have a built in filter to take care of typical cable runs. However, there are times when the drive must be located very far from the motor. For these cases, US Drives, Inc. can supply filters that will eliminate problems that are associated with long motor leads.  For more information read the following application notes.  Click here for PDF
